Alliances between Public Institutions and Non Profit Organizations in the Field of Drug Treatment & Preventions – Experiences & Current Challenges
Santiago de Chile, April 3rd, 2009
On April 3rd Dianova hosted an international conference in Santiago, Chile, designed to benchmark and promote best-practices among public institutions and community-based, non profit organizations in the field of addiction treatment and prevention. Many local and international experts were attending the meeting and shared a broad diversity of experiences in front of an audience of 270 people reunited in the lecture hall of the Catholic University of Chile.
The objective of the meeting was to bring some responses to the various challenges public institutions and nonprofit organizations have to take up, through an analysis of the differences and similarities of public policies and social development initiatives in South America and in Europe.
Nonprofit organizations are crucial components of civil society. They truly participate to the preparation and implementation of efficient health policies as well as well-organized social responses at the core of national's health systems. Their role is crucial because their initiatives complement public policies, in Chile, for example, there is about 106 thousand active nonprofit organizations, which represents 1.5% of GDP. The April 3rd Dianova conference represented for all participants a possibility to meet and share ideas but it also gave them an incentive to experience new ideas to challenge what the future holds better.
