january 2010 - uruguay: addiction, gender and decentralization holistic program

During 2009 a European Union delegation in Uruguay launched a request for proposals to fund projects of non-governmental organizations and local government agencies engaged in various types of development issues

The RFP's main objective is to achieve selected U.N. Millennium Development Goals, including public health, education and environment protection issues, as well as projects dedicated to encouraging social integration and reducing gender discrepancies, domestic violence, addiction, delinquency, and other social ills.

Dianova Uruguay submitted a project designed in partnership with the Casa Lunas Center for Adolescent Mothers and Fathers and Their Children (www.casalunas.org), and titled "Addiction, Gender and Decentralization, a Holistic Program", which has now been approved for funding by the European Union delegation.

The Dianova program will address issues such as women's health and quality of life and that of youth who are socially or psychologically at-risk, with a particular focus on gender discrepancies, inappropriate use of drugs and the risk factor of adolescent maternity in poverty situations.

The project will last 36 months, during which time health professionals will receive a specific training in the skills required to address the above-mentioned issues. Several public agencies will also benefit from the Dianova project, including the Ministry of Education and Culture's education and training centers, health personnel from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Development's "Infamilla" program. The project will also provide the various regional addiction agencies with specific follow-up and support.
