feb. 2010 - Dianova students represent nicaragua at qatar sports training camp
Nicaragua –Two young students from the Dianova "Las Marias" education center represented their country at a sport training camp, hosted by Qatar, one of the Arab emirates, and organized by the United Nation’s Global Sports Fund.
In Nicaragua, many children and adolescents have no future but drug abuse or delinquency because of dysfunctional families, marginalization that are common in many rural areas of the country.
Dianova’s "Las Marias" education center is dedicated to helping them prepare for their futures, providing 300 students each year with certified primary and secondary educations, and providing specific prevention activities, notably utilizing participation in sports as a key prevention mechanism.
This focus on sports is the chief reason why Dianova students were invited by the Global Sports Fund to represent Nicaragua at a sports training camp held in Qatar from February 20th to 26th. Jorge Luis Nicaragua and Sergio David García, both 13 years old, from the Santa Teresa municipality, and their teacher, Mr Francisco Huete, joined the 170 delegates from 16 countries at the international sports camp, the motto of which was "Play & Learn".
The objective of the event was to promote healthy lifestyles through participation in sports, with training sessions, competitions, evaluations, seminars and cultural activities. The camp provided training in various sports, while promoting respect for values, fair-play, teamwork and positive attitudes towards both winning and losing. Hopefully, the values learned from these experiences will be passed on to the youths’ environments back home.
Dianova Nicaragua management is committed to sharing the principles that the students learned at the sports camp with their school mates and continuing to emphasize both the principles, and the means of teaching them through participation in sports, in Las Marias' regular prevention program.
It's been an extraordinary experience, we have learned a lot, and I was very proud to represent Dianova and my country. All the activities were very productive – Mr. F. Huerte, delegate
I'll certainly keep on practicing fair play at sports and help my friends to do so. We enjoyed the camp very much, and now we want to pass on what we've been taught. Sergio David García, delegate, Las Marias Integral(?) Education Center
Everything we've been taught was very useful, I've learned that if you want to win, you must abide by the rules, but you must also learn to respect others and have fun together. Jorge Luis Nicaragua, delegate, Las Marias Integral Education Center
The Global Sport Fund was established in 2005 by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Qatar Olympic Committee. GSF promotes and supports the use of sports to help prevent drug use and criminal activity by young people. The first youth sports camp was held in Jounieh, Lebanon, in 2007.
