april 2010 - adolescents in treatment at spain's zandueta center help to maintain a natural site

A number of the adolescents and accompanying youth workers from the treatment program at Spain’s Zandueta center have taken part in maintaining a natural environmental site in the Arce Valley, located in Zandueta’s communal forest near northern Spain’s border with France.

This initiative has produced very positive results, not only with regard to the ecology of the area, but also with respect to the education of the participants and saving money that would otherwise have to be spent on area maintenance. As a result, newsbrief describing the program has  been echoed throughout the Navarre region’s local media and on the Canal Solidario web portal.

Pruning and harvesting wood can be particularly attractive in terms of energy use and carbon dioxide reduction. In practical terms, wood fuel vs the use of gasoil to fuel boilers also results in important annual savings for Dianova’s Zandueta center.

Zandueta Dianova center hosts a therapeutic and educational program for at-risk adolescents with poor personal maturation and social adaptation. Environmental education is a key element of the Dianova program, which consists of a series of volunteer activities that are designed both to develop skills and to create awareness of the need to protect our natural resources
